Tigers are magnificent and powerful creatures known for their beauty and strength. They are the largest members of the cat family and are native to various parts of Asia. Tigers are found in diverse habitats ranging from dense forests to grasslands and mangrove swamps. They have adapted to live in a variety of environments, including the Russian Far East, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and parts of China.
There are currently six recognized living subspecies of tigers, the first being Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), also known as the Indian tiger because it is found in India, as well as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. Next is the Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), also called the Amur tiger, mainly found in the Russian Far East and northeastern China. The third is the Indochinese Tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti). This subspecies is found in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and Myanmar. Additionally there is the Malayan Tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni), found in the southern part of the Malay Peninsula. Fifth, we have the Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) which is native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Finally, the South China Tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis), which is critically endangered and is believed to be functionally extinct in the wild.
The three definite extinct subspecies are the Bali Tiger (Panthera tigris balica) which was native to the island of Bali in Indonesia. The last known individual was shot in the 1930s. Next is the Javan Tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica) found on the Indonesian island of Java. The last confirmed sighting of this species of tiger was in the 1970s. Finally, the Caspian Tiger (Panthera tigris virgata) is also considered extinct. This subspecies inhabited the Caspian region, including Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and parts of Central Asia. The last confirmed sighting was in the 1970s. It is important to note that tigers are endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and illegal wildlife trade. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these magnificent animals and ensure their survival in the wild.
Our mission is to help tigers by fundraising, sharing informative media campaigns with proceeds to tiger charities, and more!
